Out of School, Out of Trouble?

Sustained participation in out-of-school time (OST) activities, research suggests, can improve a young person’s academic achievement and success in life. Many municipal leaders also recognize that promoting participation in high-quality OST programs can advance other city priorities — including decreasing dropout rates, lowering juvenile crime rates and strengthening workforce development. The National League of Cities reports on outcomes from three studies.

“Twitter For Food” Produces Another Amazing Show of Support

Thanks to everyone who supported @TimBlair and his monthly “TwitterForFood” campaign. Thousands skipped a meal and donated the savings to fund their local food bank yesterday! The web site reports that they added some new food banks – check them out by state under “Food Banks and World Hunger Links” in the column on the right of the page. Join the movement – As Tim says, “If 100 million twitterers each gave five dollars, we could end hunger!” More information in my previous post August 3rd, below.

I’ve been supporting this amazing cause every month, and am proud to display this month’s badge:

Food For All – Local Self-Help Solutions to End Hunger

Food For All is a 501(c)(3) non-profit marketing organization that raises money for
domestic and international charities through retail point-of-purchase (P.O.P.) programs.
These P.O.P. programs appear in over 6,000 grocery retail locations nationwide at
various times throughout the year. Customers donate simply by selecting a $1, $3 or $5
donation coupon at the checkout stand, handing it to the cashier, and having the UPC
scanned. Proceeds are then designated by the retailer to community-based, non-profit
agencies. A portion of the funds also supports Food For All’s international programs.
The primary focus of their funding is hunger relief; they also support non-profit agencies
whose missions are to promote health, education, and community. They’re available in South Florida – Check it out – To locate the nearest retailer go to http://www.foodforall.org/participatingretailers.html

Twitter Our Way to Ending Hunger?

Activist and amazing hunger fighter Tim Blair is convinced that his “Twitter for Food” project can do just that. The goal of twitterforfood.com is to get people on Twitter (there are over 100 million now worldwide) to stop once a month (actually, the first Tuesday of every month), and think about the people that are hungry around them. He believes that if we could get just a small percentage of this 100 million to give $5 a month, the difference that it would make would be incredible. It bears repeating: 100 million twitterers could end hunger! So skip a meal, tweet about it, include #twitterforfood in the message, and then use the $’s you saved on that meal to fund your local food bank. More info here. Help Pass Child Nutrition Reauthorization!

Inspiring and insightful conference call this week with Bill Shore, founder of Share Our Strength, who spoke and took questions from around one hundred other hunger advocates. Updates on the organization’s national “No Kid Hungry” campaign, and a overview of other strides being made in the fight  to end child hunger by 2015. Bill provided some great advice on actions we can all take to get the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Bill through Congress that are worth sharing. Although if Congress doesn’t act by September 30, the existing food and nutrition programs will likely be extended under a continuing resolution, we will have missed a chance to enact carefully crafted reforms that improve both the quality and nutritional value of school meals, and that improve access to programs for the large number of children who are eligible but not enrolled in programs that work.

Three actions to take to help pass Child Nutrition Reauthorization:
1) Please call or email your members of Congress, and in addition you can call House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who ultimately have the most influence over moving this legislation forward.  The message is simple – tell them to pass a robust child nutrition bill before it expires at the end of September (see below more specific instructions for calling and e-mailing).
2) Pass this call to action on to all of your friends and family.
3) Write a letter to the editor for your local newspaper.

Here’s the information on how to call/email:   Call 1-866-277-7617 and ask to be connected to your representative’s office. You can look up who your representative is online at: http://www.house.gov/htbin/zipfind.   Email your senators and representatives in support of child nutrition reauthorization via:  http://www.hungeractioncenter.org/fastaction/default.aspx.
